Last week I had the pleasure of testing out the 5D Mark II. Of course me being the video guy that I am, went straight to video mode. So I thought I will give you a taste of my experience – now unfortunately I cannot post the video due to legal issues (but we won’t get into that). You don’t know how bad I want to post the video as im watching it while im posting this review.
Review:
The body is very similar to the 5D – the lens that was mounted was the 24mm-105mm. Everything was on Auto all the time except focus, which I would switch to check out the DOF on some subjects. The review im doing is based on what it comes with so I am not going to say “Id be better if I had a rail system etc…
My arm got tired after awhile, maybe im not strong enough, but Id bet your arm would get tired too if you were holding your “VIDEO” cam the way a photographer holds his “PHOTO” cam. Yes there are jello effects here and there but then again this the first generation model im sure Canon would look to improve this in the long run. If you are going to be shooting with this or thinking of shooting with the 5D then you better have some time to set it up before hand because this is no run n gun camera – this could be a B cam for detailed shots but this will not overtake video camcorders. For the ones that are thinking of selling their 35mm adapter go on ahead – because im sure you have the money to buy lenses that is equivalent to buying a adapter and lens, especially the lenses that Bruce Dorn uses for the “realistic” (sarcasm) wedding shoot.
The colors of the footage look very saturated and sometimes like it was painted.
The 5d would be a great for setup shoots and of course with a tripod unless you want carpal tunnel. The footage that I shot was good but is it good enough for me to sell my video camcorder and/or my 35mm adapter – NOPE.
I guess you can say that this is more of user review more than a technical one.
Im not saying this is not a good ‘video’ camera but it ain’t taking over the video ones.
